Royal engagement

I know, I know. Everyone's talking about it, either to rejoice or to tut  about the fuss, and the expense, and the privilege blah blah blah.

I know for a fact that several of my (esteemed) followers are against the royal family, but I think we're incredibly lucky. We have a Queen who is the envy of (much of) the world;  who is loyal, charming, dutiful, and best of all, apolitical. When I think of politics, I see grey mist. With the royal family, it's colour and coaches and stunning horses (oh, those horses!), and happy, cheering crowds. Billions of people around the world watched the last royal wedding. Who or what can match that? Like it or not, our royal family give a great deal of pleasure to a great many people. And I'm one of them. After all, no one has to take any interest if they don't want to. Just don't read the papers for a week or so.

I've no idea what the future will hold once the Queen has gone,  but for the moment, we have a royal family to be proud of. At a cost of just 50p a year each.

I, for one, think that's a bargain.

(I'm also a huge fan of Meghan Markle, not least because Suits is our favourite TV programme, but I know that's beside the point.)

  1. It is the same here in the US ... but, there are so many, like me, who are royal watchers and are excited and already planning to be up to view the wedding when it happens. I agree with everything you said about the Queen, whom I admire tremendously, and all the pomp and circumstance associated with the Crown. Long may it last.

  3. Someone obviously really didn't like this post as I promptly lost a follower! I think I know who you are, and you'll be missed, but hey! Can't win em all....

  4. I am ambivalent. I have stopped buying papers with the exception of the Telegraph on the last Saturday of the month. I get it for the puzzles as it's a shadow of it's former self.
I suspect she has the better of the two brothers but don't know either.

    1. I agree about Harry - I think he's a really good sort, in the best sense of the word (good, not sort).

  5. I watched the BBC interview with Harry and Meghan, and was most impressed by her. Never watched "Suits" so had only seen her in photos. I think that she will be a wonderful wife to Harry, and a confident and beautiful member of the Royal family. I did my Oxfam shift yesterday with a 23 yr old young woman, who said she wasn't much bothered with the royals, but she would be watching the wedding!

    1. Frances, you HAVE to watch Suits. It's just wonderful. We've been all the way through it twice.

    1. Good for you, Wendy (and them)! My daughter is already planning a party - she held a great one for Kate And William's wedding day.

  7. Lovely post, Frances, and I completely agree with you. Have never seen Suits (yet) but I'm so impressed with what I've heard and read about Meghan so far, especially her concern for women's rights.

  8. It doesn't matter who they are, I feel it's a good thing for people to be happy and in love. The world needs more of that.
