A cruise kind of person?

We are going on a cruise. Tomorrow.

It's quite a posh cruise (we haven't had a holiday for 3 years, so there's holiday money to be spent. Or that's what we tell ourselves). The boat is a small one, and it's dauntingly impressive. We're going from Venice to Venice, which sounds like a waste of time, but we're calling in on bits of Croatia on the way. And bits of Italy.

But I feel like an imposter. I never had myself down as a cruise kind of person (this was John's idea), and I've no idea what to wear (I live in jeans. People don't cruise in jeans...do they?) or even how to behave. I've got stacks of tee shirts and stuff piled up on the bed, and I'm now in a state of paralytic panic.

But never mind. We have books, and the boat (ship?) has a library open 24 hours a day, so maybe it's my kind of thing after all. And we don't have the dinner-at-the-captain's-table thing, nor do we have to watch girls arm in arm doing that scissor thing with their legs to music in the evenings, which is what I thought always happened on cruises. And if the worst happens, I'm quite a strong swimmer.

I'll tell you all about it when I get back next week. If I get...no. Think positive.

  1. Ooh, fab! I've never done a cruise. Please play quoits at some point if you get the chance. I always picture people on cruises playing quoits.

What books are you taking with you? Ignore me if that's too nosy.

  4. Aliya, I've never played quoits - bit like that thing where you try to win a goldfish at a fair? - but I'll give it a try. Books. Hmm. I'll confess when I get back.

Thanks, Teresa and Jarmara. I'm hopeless with a camera, but not bad taking pics on my mobile (when I can see what I'm doing).

No further on with the packing, and have discovered there are holes in John's sandals. I know sandals are supposed to be mainly hole, but these are more hole than they should be. Not really cruise-worthy...

  6. I'd love to go cruising but Other Half gets seasick in the bath so not much hope of me ever doing it.
Have a great time and happy reading.

  8. You'll love it Frances - I've been on quite a lot of cruises (husband is in travel) and it's so relaxing with all the food and entertainment (if you want it). Wish I'd known and I could have told you more about your particular line. If you have time, you could look at husband's website (http://www.cruisewithconfidence.co.uk) for info.

I love the way you can see places without carting your luggage about. Clothes are normally just smart casual so don't worry about that. I've been on formal evening ones (with long dresses) and those that only expect dressy/smart outfits in the evening, which is the majority these days.

Have a wonderful time - and enjoy Venice if you haven't been before. Fantastic place - take the No 1 vaparetto (water bus) right up the Grand Canal. Look forward to hearing about it.

  9. I'm sure you'll have a good time, Frances. I love cruising, so am probably biased, but there's books, sun loungers, food, nice views, more food, no need to do anything so plenty of writing time, interesting places to go - what more could you want?
