Nose news is...

..well, not too bad, on the whole.

But my operation (remember the Nose Operation? The nasty one last Novemeber? Surely you can't have forgotten already?) has left me with asymmetrical nostrils.

Now, I realise  that isn't really such a big deal, but for a while, it really bothered me. I know faces aren't symmetrical (if you're not sure about this, look at the mirror  reflection of someone you know well. It will look odd, because you're used to their right-way-round asymmetry). I'm getting used to it (after all, I don't have to look at it, do I?), but it has made me nose-aware (a condition where you focus on  people's noses, searching anxiously for those that have one nostril bigger/higher/uglier than the other). I've found that  very few people seem to have a matching pair of  nostrils, and I find that comforting.

What about you? How are you, in the equal nostril department?

PS the above is not my nose. It's younger and browner than mine. But it has a mind of lopsidedness which makes me feel quite fond of it.

  1. My nose is the least of my worries. It has been broken several times but is a beauty compared with it's surroundings. My head looks as if it's been trodden on a as I grow older the skin seems a couple of sizes too large.

  2. I have not forgotten your nose operation, Frances! You are right; there is probably no nose under the sun (unless surgically treated) that is completely symmetrical. Mine isn't, but it still is a nice enough nose, I think. It serves me well day in, day out, and I would not want another one. As for my hands - well, that's a different story!

    1. Now you HAVE to tell me what's wrong with your hands, Meike!

    2. They look like the hands of a woman twice my age - but have done so already when I was in my teens. Very bony and veiny, and some of my fingers are so crooked they look as if they were broken at some stage (which they never were!). When I stretch my left hand flat out, the middle finger bends so far to the left that its tip ends up underneath the ring finger. And don't get me started on my finger nails...!

  3. It's the success of the operation that matters and not the asymmetric nostrils. You look lovely. I can understand the obsession though. Two years ago I had an eye-lift, not for cosmetic reasons but for droopy eye-lids causing obstruction to my vision. Since then I am very aware of people with droopy eyelids. We all have our non-symmetric and droops to
    bear.

    1. How wise you are, Lyndd. And lovely? If you mean that photo, it's quite old now. And so am I...(sorry about the typo. iPad won't correct. I mean Lynne!)

  4. On the whole, I think other parts of my body have been more of a worry to me than the nose, so far. But I know what you mean. It's enough to look at photos of oneself to get that feeling of "is that really me" (because one is used to the mirror image).

    1. DT I always try to console myself with the thought that I'm the only person who doesn't have to look at me.

    2. Today I was kindly forewarned, by a doctor, that if I have to have a misbehaving mole beneath my ear surgically removed, this may cause a certain "asymmetry" to my face... I'm sure it won't seem very funny to me if it does come to that; but because of reading this blog post yesterday, I kind of had to bite my tongue not to laugh just when he said it. Not sure if I managed to keep a straight face or else he may have thought I was going to cry... (I suppose there is a risk I'll end up with a wry smile for the rest of my life.)

  5. I very rarely look in a mirror, but I think mine is averagely symmetrical. Like Adrian I have broken mine a few times (Rugby, boxing, sledging). Like most chaps, my looks do not concern me.

    1. Good for you, Cro. But if you're going in for boxing, a suppose symmetry will son be a thing of the past..?

  6. I've been wondering about your nose as I had the same operation. Mine healed well and you can't tell any difference unless you looked through a magnifying glass. Yes, it's strange to think that other people don't see us quite the same. Other people do look a bit squiffy in the mirror. I think I'm too old to care any more. I'm even embracing the grey and have never had so many compliments about my hair, ever. I think people are more interested in personality than looks, so I'm happy with that.

    2. I think after about 18 months the puffiness had gone down to near normal. Had my op in Sept 2011 and discharged in Feb 2012. I was told 18 months and that was about right.

  7. There's a lump on the bridge of mine where my dog collided with me and broke it when I was 13 (the dog was uninjured!) xx

    1. Oh, do tell! If its too obscene, I can delete it. Not sure many families read this, anyway.

  9. I couldn't really tell you whether my facial features are symmetrical or not and I've never seen my bum (which presumably might be thought to be symmetrical) but I do know that my knees are so asymmetrical as to look as if they belong to different people. I know that because every physio/doctor/person-at-the-gym tells me so. The bottom line in all our cases. Frances, is 'who cares?".

  10. I'd don't really, Graham. Not any more.

  11. I don't care about my nose... It's the rest of my face that worries me.

    1. Wendy, if you don't care about your nose, it's probably beautiful. I've never liked mine.

  12. My nostrils have never matched. I distract attention from it by having mad hair.

Actually that's just an excuse. I'd have mad hair anyway.

  13. Patsy, I've no idea whether mine matched before the op. Maybe they didn't. ..? But they look pretty odd now!
