Mugs

I read in the paper that you can tell a lot about someone from their mugs. Apparently, posh people have mis-matched mugs, whereas middle class people have nice, matching mugs. Above is a photo of some of our mugs. We must be posh 😀

Some of our mugs are very old; some not so old. And we each  have our favourites. When they've just come out of the dishwasher, we have a lovely wide choice. But as their numbers dwindle, we're down to the nasty thick football one (sorry, Joe) and the faded Welsh one (circa 1985 - why has this unpleasant mug lasted so long?). My favourite is the flowery one in the middle (a present from a friend), and we both love the one on the extreme right, although it's chipped.

Life is much more exciting with a variety of mugs. What do your mugs say about you?

  1. What a lovely collection. I imagine each one has a story for you.
My mugs say that I am in transition. They are mostly left-behind-when-middle-son-went-overseas. and I am torn between using them and paying $$$ sending them to him, as they are precious to him.
Meanwhile my own (botanical, and thin-edged, which are my favourite kind) sit up in the cupboard still in boxes. Then there are my REAL favs that I love so much I use them to hold my sable watercolour brushes.

    1. So your best ones are in boxes or full of paint brushes....what do you drink out of, Kate?

    2. I drink out of two monstrous clunky ones that my son left behind Frances. I really think they are too heavy to send from New Zealand to Sweden. You have coagulated my thoughts, and galvanised me into action! I am taking them to the op shop and am getting out the boxed ones. Life's too short to drink from mugs you don't like!

    3. Good for you, Kate! If only you could organise me as well.....

  2. I have three mugs and they all have advertising on them. I must be consumer class.

    1. Excavator tracks was the best one as it came full of Quality Street and no purple ones. Someone stole my most esoteric one it was for Dodson & Horrell Hoof Support. Whatever that is.

  3. When O.K. is here on the weekend, we have our coffee from matching mugs - the only two in my household that are alike and were a wedding gift from my husband's boss in 2005, just large plain white ones of thick porcelain.
Week mornings on my own, I switch between my favourite mugs with the seasons: My Sims2-mug right now (The Sims 2 is my favourite computer game), a mug with a fox from September to the first of Advent, a mug with snow flakes on December to about February, and one with flowers on as soon as I think spring is here.
I also have Cadbury mugs and two to commemorate the wedding of Charles and Camilla - Steve and I bought them as a joke, because they were supposed to marry the same day as us, but postponed the celebrations by a day when the pope died. One of those mugs still has the original date on, the other the new date.

  4. Everyone in our house has their favourite mug and then we have a cupboardful of other mugs ..... just in case we are invaded by a hoard of visitors all at once.

    1. L, someone asked me whether things taste better out of a favourite mug. The answer is - definitely!

  5. I don't know what my mugs say about me, but I could have written this post......it is exactly how I feel about mine. Just counted them...there are 28 in the cupboard at the moment ( dishwasher emptied recently!). There is a set of 6 flowery ones....M and S, bought from charity shop, and another set of 4 spotty ones from Waitrose many years ago. Several odd ones that belonged to my Mum and a random collection makes up the rest. I really enjoy my mugs and pick a favourite when I make a drink. Don't like it when husband makes the tea and gives me one I am not so fond of !
Nearly finished the book......birth imminent ! ( don't think that gives anything away )

    1. You’re a woman after my own heart, Frances. I hope you enjoyed the book?

    2. Yes, I really liked the book. If I want to keep reading it is a sure sign of enjoyment . I wanted to know what happened to the characters. I recently read a book that I was loving until about 3/4 the way through, when suddenly the " speech" started sounding wrong/stilted and I didn't enjoy the rest of it quite so much! I have found " Women behaving badly"..(the old title) .....on the Kindle app and have started that now. I must have read it some years ago, but it feels new! In one ear and out the other...that's me!!

    3. Frances, I forget almost every book I read within weeks or even less. I read a lot, and only a very few books stick in my mind. Old age....?

    4. PS...I left you a review when I read your new book ... don't know if you went back and read it, but I enjoyed your characters greatly and wasn't disappointed to the end. I delightful read.

  6. Our mugs are all mismatched. I’m very OCD about them and if someone gives me coffee in the afternoon in my ‘first cup of tea in the morning’ mug, there’s trouble.

    1. Wendy, you’re definitely posh. And I’m the same about wrong mugs. Grrr!

  7. Either I'm middle class or just out of space in my cupboards, or a bit OCD. Possibly all three! Anyway I got rid of most of my odd and mismatching mugs a few years ago when I wanted to make room for both some new ones + some inherited stuff.

  8. Well we all seem to have a view on mugs. Perhaps I'll blog about mine one day. As it is I've just opened a cupboard full of them to get a mug because 'my' mug is in the dishwasher. I wonder why we have favourite/usual mugs?

    1. Some just feel better, Graham. Not sure why. It's a mystery. Looking forward to seeing "your" mug...?

  9. Have never really thought about the mugs we have - except, I have a huge favourite one for my first tea in the morning, given by a friend and made of porcelain as tea tastes better from a china cup or mug! Otherwise, we have a couple of brown ceramic mugs we got free from a book club many, many moons ago, a couple of Denby ones I use for my coffee and a few other odd ones. I bought four matching mugs in the M&S sale when we moved to keep for guests but husband and I like using them ourselves.

  11. A bit late to just add that the Posh/Non posh story, I think, started with Boris Johnson providing refreshment to a load of reporters outside his home. I would never use my 'good mugs' on free coffee to people in the garden.

    1. Does that mean that some people pay you for their coffee, Potty??

    2. Not yet, but I'm thinking of opening a cafe/bar as I've so many mugs and wine glasses!
