My own annus horribilis

This year just goes from bad to worse for us. It started with a family tragedy, then the death - timely, but sad - of my uncle, moved seamlessly through several horse accidents and then Titch's death, and now John has fallen and broken his hip.

Why am I sitting here blogging? Because John is in theatre, and I can't settle to anything else. Waiting is horrible, isn't it. My kids have been marvellous, insisting on coming down in relays, and I'm just sitting in a useless heap. Moaning into the blogosphere...

But the sun is shining. That's got to be good, hasn't it?

  1. Oh! Titch died? I'm so sorry and about John...in theatre I guess means hospital? Not rehearsing for a play. He probably wishes he was doing that. The sun shining is definitely good. Maybe you'll have a better October. Hope so.

  5. So sorry to hear that the Universe keeps piling it on. Husbands as patients can be trying. ("English art of understatement", in action here!). At least you'll know where he is for a few weeks, and you can threaten to take away his crutches if he's bad.
Ethical question: Is it O.K. to people-watch, and write about it, in a hospital situation?

    1. Thanks, ER. And of course it's ok to people watch, anywhere anytime! And write about it, too.

  6. "Moaning into the blogosphere"...perfectly put, and I know what you mean, Frances, but I prefer to think of you reaching out to your friends in the blogosphere. We are thinking of you and John and your kids, and sending warmest well-wishes your way.

  8. Hi Frances, sounds like you have a lovely family, and moan to the blogsphere as much as you like, we are listening. Hope things pick up for you and that John is feeling better soon.

  10. Heavens above Frances I miss a day and you manage to have had yet another disaster. If it were me blogging about a disaster I'm sure you'd manage to come up with some suitable sentences but all I can do is sit here in a perplexed daze. I hope all goes well for you and John over the next while (silly phrase but I have no idea how long so a while it will have to be).

  11. I do believe that when we 'meet' people through
blogging/reading their words, there is power in sending good thoughts and wishes through the ether......so I am sending some your way in order that your horrible year will improve....and yes sunshine is good!

  12. I'm so sorry. I hope for a fast and full recovery. I can't believe how these awful things follow on, one after the other, just as life seems to be settling down after the last bad turn.
Thinking of you and wishing you better fortune for next year. x

  15. When Eldest was 2 she fractured her lower leg and we were told mending took a week for every year - so, with a bit of luck, he'll be up and about in no time! I'm sure moaning into the blogosphere will help keep you sane - along with your marvelous children.

  16. I agree with libby......I find I come to really care for the people whose blogs I read on a regular basis. Commenting and then getting a reply from the blogger makes my day! ( sort of pen friend? ) So sorry to hear about John after all your other sad times this year. I see from your reply earlier that he was OK after the op.I haven't read your blog for long, so was not aware of some of the earlier occurrences . I hope he is soon up and about and nothing else occurs to distress you .( Nearly finished " Dead Ernest" What a great read, I don't want it to end! )

And look after yourself, too, Frances, taking care of an 'invalid' can be hard work.

  21. My own annus horribilis was 5 years ago (July 2007 - July 2008) so you have my complete sympathy. Take care of yourself and thank God for your wonderful kids. This is when you realise just what a good job you did on raising decent human beings. Here's wishing John a quick recovery.
