Magpie 149

EPITAPH

A smouldering pile of fag ends
Are all that's left of Jane.
She gave up smoking twice a year
Then took it up again.
And emptying that last ashtray,
We struggle to ease our pain.
But we try to think of it like this;
Our loss is Heaven's gain.

(With thanks to Tess at Magpie Tales for the picture)

  1. Well done! With such in mind, it's back to the drawing board for me. I know many who have quit, started, quit, started...

  3. A friend, a heavy smoker, had a massive stroke a few months ago. She may not be 'Heaven's gain' for many years yet but she has found Hell whilst she is still here on earth. If your superb ditty stops one person smoking Frances it will have been even more of a masterpiece than it is superficially.

  4. "Heaven's gain" was clever, witty and mordant - mostly mordant.

  6. YES! A lot of us are writing this same refrain- we miss our friends and our family who chose tobacco over us.

  7. Brilliant! I'm tempted to send it to my daughter-in-law who gives up regularly, though I'm not sure it would do much for family relations.

  9. This would sit very well in the Government's anti-smoking campaign. Brilliant writing.

  10. Great way to finish the year. I know two people I am hoping will give up again. Am tempted to send them this but don't want 2013 to start with a family fall out.

  13. Your language is much different here than an American poet's would be. And in this case, I believe it is also much better.

    Very nice.

  14. Very good. I hope it encourages a few people to give up and breath easier.
