Things I've learnt in the past week

1. That an infected wound in the nose can beat childbirth hands down for sheer agony.
2. That ALL painkillers make me feel sick.
3. That missing a beloved granddaughter's starring role in Oliver is heartbreaking, especially as apparently she stole the show.
4. That the best thing in the world when you're ill is a daughter who drives 2 hours for a surprise visit, leaving the fridge with enough ready meals to keep us going until the weekend.
5. That ready meals are sheer heaven. No shopping, cooking or washing up. This must be what royalty feels like.
6. That self-pity is deeply unattractive, even when it's one's own. So I'll stop now.

  1. Poor you. Have you considered a niqab as temporary shopping wear? Waitrose do some very good 'ready meals', as do Marks. Let's hope you feel better well before Christmas. xx

    1. Thanks, Cro. The meals are Waitrose, and delicious. Only two left, though ;(

  2. Oh Frances, that sounds absolutely awful. And painkillers making you feel ill as well - that's adding insult to injury. And missing your granddaughter in the show heaps on further misery. Sending you a hug and lots of sympathy.
But what a wonderful daughter you have. Hope you feel well again soon xx

    1. You're lovely and sympathetic, Teresa. Sadly, if you could see me you mightn't want to hug me, though...

  3. You have my sympathy. Pain is not nice but it is one of the ways god has of letting us know we are alive.
I used to get dihydro codeine. 50mg. Excellent and if one doesn't work take two with a large whisky. The pain doesn't go away but you will be in no state to bother about it.

    1. Adrian, anything with codeine makes me sick, but alcohol is a great help

  4. A bit of self-pity is fine. It's when it becomes a habit that it's wrong. You have good cause to feel sorry for yourself. Have a good swear and kick something that can't kick you back. Go on, have a curse-fest.

  5. Sorry you are feeling awful. If you cant have a good moan on your own blog, well... We are all your friends and can take it. Keep warm, eat chocolate or have a large glass of something, and get well soon.

  6. Sorry you're in such pain, Frances.

  7. Oh No, Frances. Get well soon and don't worry about the self-pity, we are all allowed that once in a while. Just wash it down with a good measure of brandy. I had to miss my daughter's Christmas show one year due to illness (she is 23 now) and I felt awful. So, my sweet little cherub did a special show just for me. I'm sure your granddaughter would do that for you too. All the best!

  8. Poor you! With all that going on at the same time - pain, bad reaction to painkillers, missing out on your granddaughter's performance - you are officially entitled to a good, thorough wallowing in self-pity.
Just remember: you won't look like Michael Jackson once your nose has healed. Now, isn't that something to be happy about?

    1. At the moment, Meike, I think I'd rather have Michael Jackson's nose. At least it was...er...small. Thanks for the sympathy.

  9. How awful for you. As already said…keep taking the alcohol and moan as much as you like, to us, your friends. X

    1. We finished the ready meals last night, Joanna. I may even have to cook. Sigh.

  11. I think you're allowed a little self-pity, Frances! I did experience dreadful nasal infection after an op to remove polyps many years ago and, yes, agonising! But I'm sure yours will have taken you to new heights. Never lose that wonderful sense of humour - it will see you through everything.

  12. I'm sorry to be so late to the party Frances. You certainly have my sympathy although, however sincere, it's absolutely no substitute for not being allergic to painkillers.
