Why don't I ever learn...

....that buying clothes online is a BAD IDEA?

In mitigation, there's now a dearth of shops in Devizes, as more and more close down in favour of the three Cs: coffee, charity and cards. We have scores of them. But if I can't find the right clothes, and am too lazy to drive far, I shop on line.

A friend of my daughter has a mantra: "never buy anything unless you love it, as if you don't love it when you buy it, you will never love it". How true. My very outdated wardrobe is full of things I don't love, and many of them are there because I bought them online and was too idle to return them, hoping that love would blossom. It didn't.

But at least I'm now getting better at returning things I don't love. I seems to spend my time parceling up unloved new clothes and traipsing into town to the "drop off" point or the post office. So far this spring, there have been a couple of pairs of sandals, a skirt, a top, and I forget what else.

This
                 is

                                                                      that I'm sending myself to

  1. Hungerford has some decent shops I think and it is not too far. Marlborough used to but it is getting so expensive

    1. Ah, but that means losing a parking space, Jenny. We have no off street parking of our own.

  2. Hi Frances, you need a personal shopper! When I was fifty, I decided to bite the bullet and visit both Debenhams and Next who offer the service free of charge.
I am hopeless at 'dressing' myself.
After speaking to assistants in both stores I decided to go with Next. It was a fabulous experience. All I did was give the shop assistant my budget, which was £300 for a work wardrobe for Spring/Summer and she fitted me out with clothes I would never have chosen for myself.
She put me in colours I'd never of considered.
The whole experience was uplifting and gave me the confidence to choose a few more items from other stores in similar styles.
I now do this a couple of times a year, and always have a brief. I'm due to go very soon, for a couple of weekend outfits.

I do buy sports clothing online though, and send very little back, I must admit it is easy.

  3. High, girl.
I gotta lotta thots and stories in our 22 blogs…
and I’m more than happy to share,
to give to you what God has granted me - a steward
in this finite existence, this lifelong demise.

    Faith, hope, and love -
the greatest of these is love:
    jump into faith...
    and you'll see with love.
Doesn’t matter if you don’t believe
    (what I write);
    God believes in you.
    God. Bless. You.

    1. No offense, but if going upstairs involves meeting you, I think I'll stick with my mates down below.

  4. Ahaaa; another nutter I see (above).

I would never buy clothes on line, in fact I hardly ever buy clothes full stop.

  5. This isn't a boring post. It lifted the stone Dr Kold has been hiding under. It is a rare day when I agree with Cro but I do today.

    1. Good to see you two playing nicely together. You must have been taking the "nutter's" words to heart.

    2. It's because it's May Day Eve or was. Cro likes left of centre. He is just shy when it comes to coming out.

  6. I think I know why I stick to Facebook where you can choose your friends!! I have finally stopped buying from catalogues (I have never bought on line- too security conscious). Go early onto the high street and beat the crowds - that's the secret.

    1. What high street would that be, Maggie? Ours is fast disappearing.

    2. Well as I shop mostly in M&S, any high street will do. Did I mention I was boring?

    3. Not our high street,Maggie.

  7. It probably does not surprise you to hear that I don't find this post boring at all - clothes are one topic I could go on about endlessly, shallow as I am :-)
The range of shops here is really good, I don't need to go elsewhere, not even when I am trying to find something for a special occasion (such as a wedding, or like my Mum's 70th birthday last year). Therefore, I don't need to shop online for clothes, and very rarely have done so. Being of standard height and proportions means I can shop without trying something on relatively risk free, which is why I have found some rather nice and useful items at Aldi's, where of course there aren't any changing rooms and you do take the pieces out of the packaging.
Your friend's mantra about buying only what you love is a good one! Trouble is, I love too many dresses and things...

  8. It's easier for men. A twenty year-old rugby shirt and a pair of trousers from ASDA suits me anytime.

  10. I like shopping for clothes when I can take my time to browse but I never buy online as I can't risk them fitting properly!

  11. Clothes I order online (and before that, from catalogues) rarely seem to live up to the pictures on the screen/page, however carefully I study them before buying. Even before I try them on, I'm disappointed, realising this is something I would never have picked out, let alone taken into a changing-room, if I were in a shop.
Maybe I expect too much. I would go shopping, but can't spare the time to drive the twenty miles every time. This is why I possess only one 'best dress' and have worn it to every formal occasion ( I don't get invited to many) for twenty years. x

    1. . Joanna, you're a woman after my own heart. I have one best skirt, which does for every Christmas, the very occasional party, and any other occasion where I need to look respectable. The rest of the time it's jeans, jeans, jeans...(from Gap. On line and reliable. And long enough).

  12. I've never bought any clothes online. I'm not keen on buying them in shops either, but at least then I can try them on so I know they fit and I won't have to go through the whole thing again a week later.

  13. Firstly where did this go when you first posted it? I happened to visit the Google reader just after you posted it and it wasn't there. Anyway the number of people who have commented obviously indicates that either we are all boring or that it was not a boring post. I am inclined to the latter point of view simply because I found it interesting and I'm not going to insult myself. I suppose being a man it is easier to buy some of one's clothes online. Once I know what I want I will happily buy online. Actually I find one of the best times to buy some things online is in the John Lewis sale. I will usually have seen the items when I was in the shop anyway.

    1. Graham, It disappeared because I thought it was too boring to post. Then I thought, why not? No-one has to read it.
We get discount at John Lewis, but I can never find anything I like. So it's back to Gap jeans. Again.
