Talking turkey

My grandson would like a turkey for Christmas. As a pet. Yes, really. Turkeys, he says, make excellent pets (to me, they are hideously unattractive, and in any case, I've been scarred for life after being chased by one when I was about five).

But there would be one advantage. His family could have in the rear window of their car a sign saying: "A turkey is for life. Not just for Christmas". Makes it almost worthwhile. Perhaps I'll get one (they have to be cheaper to keep than a horse....).

  1. Turkeys certainly have faces only a mother could love, but who knows - they possibly really make great pets, although I doubt they'd be happy inside a house or living on their own, away from their fellow turkeys.

  2. The worst smell I have ever encountered was a turkey farm. It was 60 years ago and I still remember it. Far worse than a hog farm.

You get one turkey, and soon he'll want another, and pretty soon you and all the neighbors will know what I'm talking about. Mark my words.

    1. Bon, when my youngest son was working on a turkey farm earning money for his gap year, I had to make him take all his clothes off before he came into the house. The smell was appalling.

  3. We have enough Turkey bits left over from Thanksgiving to cobble one together for him.

  4. How on earth did he get this idea into his head?

    1. Wendy, I've no idea. He loves animals, and maybe the imminence of the Yuletide festivities gave him the idea...?

  5. Love your grandson's sense of humour - even if he's being serious!

    1. He's deadly serious, Rosemary, but I have it on the best authority that he's not getting one.

  6. Dear Frances, I just stumpled (yes, stumpled) over your Blog via someone else's and wonder how I've missed you all this time. I love it! I've read your stories in various Magazines (another tick in the liking box there) and now I discover that you have a lovely dun ?Connemara? ... so there's another tick in another like box. So now Hoss and I shall be 'following' you (as opposed to stalking) and as you are a much more prolific Blogger than I (and as you seem to be able to get on to Blogger as often as you like, which my BlueScreenGoblin doesn't permit), I shall enjoy your exploits from the uncomfort of my current writing chair. 1. Welcome, Celia! It's always nice to come across new people, and you are obviously into horses...? He's not Connemara, but quarter Arab, quarter thoroughbred and half sports horse. Nice combination. I hope to see you again, and will pop across and visit you!

  7. But you can't ride a turkey. Unless you are very small. How tall is your grandson?
