G is for Gym (early, because I'm away tomorrow)

I used to go to the gym. Three times a week. I absolutely hated every minute, but it was wonderful when it was over. It almost made it worthwhile. Almost. But sometimes, this can happen:

"I'm going to get fit!" cried young Ned.
"So goodbye to fat, sugar and bread."
He thought going to the gym
Would be so good for him.
But his heart disagreed. Now, he's dead.

So I gave up, and bought a horse.

  1. You have a wonderful capacity for making me laugh and with such brevity of wit too. I know several people to whom that happened in reality.

Unfortunately as soon as I saw the last sentence my sense of the ridiculous kicked in and I immediately thought of you eschewing fat, sugar and bread.... and eating horse instead.

  2. I've never been to the gym. It has never appealed to me because I'm far too lazy to commit to anything regular outside of the house. I can do regular things if I can stay at home to do them. I do exercises from my Claudia Schiffer DVD every day without fail. But only on the living-room floor. My husband is still hoping he'll get up and find I've transformed into Claudia Schiffer.

    I love your limerick.

  3. My gym is a place I go to once or twice a week, do my exercises and go back home - all done in 35 minutes, and it is just down the road from where I live. It is not one of those gyms where the others look at what kind of labels you are wearing or how firm your bum is, no silly music blaring from the ceiling, no cocktail bar, jaccuzzi or other such things, but people of all ages simply go there to do something for their health.
And it has worked wonders for my back (I have skoliosis), therefore, I'll stick to it for as long as I can, since it is for my own good to keep my back and shoulder muscles in shape.

  4. Fun post, Frances. I detest the gym but I love to dance, even if it's just at home, and now I'm doing doing Tae Bo from a DVD - at least I can stop when I've had enough!

  5. Our gym is in the same building as the swimming pool. As I walk past, through the fresh air in the park, Isee all the fit folk in their sweatbands slaving away on treadmills and breathing in the stink of chlorine.

  6. I can't imagine anything worse than going to a gym. Hot, airless, sweaty bodies. Give me the open air and a good walk (or even a horse) any day.

  7. No gym for me either. I keep fit doing the housework, cleaning windows (all that stretching), and gardening (sometimes). I do like to walk though.

  9. Sorry, I seem to be repeating myself and my picture has gone walk-abouts.

  10. Ugh, I hate the gym. I can play sports all day, but gym work outs kill me. Awesome post and happy A-Z blogging.

  11. GB - eating horse. Now, there's a thought...

Joanna, a DVD sounds like an excellent idea. If you can keep it up...

Librarian, your disciplined approach puts me to shame.

Rosemary, another DVD. Perhaps I should try it...

Lynne, you're my kind of woman!

    Gail, you too!

Maggie, what's housework? Do you have to pay to do it?

    Thanks, S.L.Hennessy. Sports all day...hmmm.

    That's the spirit, Colette!
