Things I have learnt this week.

1. That a very cheap small black umbrella, when taken out in a storm, ends up battered and broken and resembling a drowned crow.

2. That there are mosquitoes in Devizes. Now. I saw someone buying mosquito repellent.

3. That a joint of beef rescued from the freezer after two years is very tough (although my son-in-law had two helpings)...

4. ...but bought ready-made custard is much nicer than the kind I used to make (but not with beef).

5. That I don't like whiskey any more.

6. That the Scandanavians don't like my new story (they often do like my stories).

7. That a lot of people don't really like turkey, but have it at Christmas anyway. I'm one of them. But I suppose if it were that nice, we'd eat much more of it. I feel the same about mince pies. If they're so delicious, how come we don't eat them all the year round? I make good mince pies, but don't eat them.

  1. We don't really like turkey either so we don't have it. I do like mince pies though - proper homemade ones, with brandy butter and cream. It's probably a very good thing I don't eat them all year round as I'd look like Santa if I did.

    1. Patsy, I think I might just be able to manage one of your mince pies!

  2. I'm the opposite to you with mince pies. I quite enjoy eating them but I can never make edible ones myself.

  3. I cook goose instead of turkey, but it seems to jump about in the oven. There's always a terrible thumping. I find it very creepy, but the others enjoy it and say Christmas wouldn't be the same without it.
My husband likes mincemeat in cakes, so I have to make mince-fairy-cakes as well as mince-pies.

  4. I used to make huge batches of mince pies and freeze them - we'd be eating them till spring, but now it's the ready made ones I'm afraid :-) x

    1. How reassuring, Teresa. I'm not a fan of the domestic goddess!

  5. I enjoy turkey because it is a pretty bland and has an agreeable texture thus making it the perfect vehicle for the things I really love: really tasty proper bread sauce, chestnut stuffing, any other sort of herby tasty stuffing, cranberry jelly, clove onions (in addition to the ones in the bread sauce) and so on.

I'm not a great eater of sweet things and cakes but I would eat mince pies with thick cream every time I had a cup of coffee if it wasn't for the fact that I have more respect for my body than that.

  6. We have progressed to turkey roll, which means we don't have a carcas to wrestle with on Boxing Day. My mince pies aren't a patch on Sainsbury's deep filled ones. I have been collecting recipes, but with 3 consecutive days of entertaining, I think I'll be buying at lot of ready-made stuff this year. Life's too short to stuff a mushroom.

    2. Ah. The carcas. That's another thing. All those stringy sinews.

  7. I think it's the etceteras that people like more than the turkey. We haven't had it for years and the family vote is for a massive joint of beef.
