"The lounge" illustrated

Here it is, as promised (see previous post). Cosy? No. Comfortable? No. Those chairs are like buckets, and the backs come barely half-way up the sitter's back (I tried one out). They are neatly placed around little tables. The thing in the corner is a horrible spray of metal flower-like things which light up. As for the red/black colour scheme - well, words fail me. But homely and tasteful it is not. Oh, and please note the sparkly ceiling lights. The photo doesn't do them justice.

More to come...

  1. The 'lounge' is not to my taste either...where is it? I just recently got back into the blogosphere.

  2. An evaluation by a qualified occupational therapist might set the hierarchy to rights.

    1. Good point , ER. It's very hard for wheechairs to negotiate, and buggies are forbidden.

  3. I'd missed your previous post, and was thinking 'Surely this can't be Frances's 'lounge'!!!' Luckily I went back one page, and saw that it was in fact a bispokely made job elsewhere..... PHEW.

    1. I'm very offended that you could think, even for a nanosecond, that this was mine, Cro. I'd rather live in a cave.

  4. Chic and modern, yes; tasteful, no, homefy, not at all. And bespoke?! I've seen VERY similar pieces of furniture at IKEA and elsewhere, so... sorry, I don't believe the "bespoke" bit one minute. Possibly whoever sold them the furniture ripped them off, charging twice the price.
Not only do the chairs look uncomfortably "close" around a person of average weight - I can't imagine how anyone with a few extra pounds will fit into them. The arrangement seems completely out of sync with the telly on the wall. If I were to sit there to watch a program, I'd not be able to see properly from any chair.
Ceiling lights: The worst one can do to a room, unless it is a surgery where operations are carried out.

  6. I once went into a Travel Lodge that looked like this....Are you sure it isn't a Travel Lodge?
It isn't a joking matter. I would top myself if I had to sit in there for more than half an hour.

    1. Me too, Adrian. Apparently the residents now hardly use it.

  7. It looks truly dreadful and ill-conceived. Terribly depressing, not to mention uncomfortable. I hope there is some way in which attention can be drawn to the needs of those who will actually be sitting in this room and that it can then be changed.

    1. They're trying, Joanna, but I don't hold out much hope.

  8. Colour, and the thingy in the corner are largely subjective so I shall ignore them(even though I don't like them) but there are a number of points to be made. If that is bespoke then it will be more expensive than off the shelf and whoever wasted the money should be held to account (fat chance) however I don't believe that it is bespoke. I agree that an occupational therapist's view would be useful. The sparkly lights may well not be to everyone's taste either but could you find anything that is? It's a darn sight better than fluorescent tubes (I assume that it's the eco-required modern LED lighting). The main point remains in my mind the lack of consultation and inclusion.

    1. Re lighting, I think some soft lamps would be better, Graham. But it was a shocking waste of money. They had a Grand Opening, too!

  9. Elderly people, and some younger ones, need support for their upper backs, necks and heads. These chairs are for waiting rooms not lounges where you need to feel comfortable. Here's a story for the national newspapers.

  10. They have tried to be ultra modern without considering the elderly. Some of the chairs in the hotel where we stay are like this and although comfortable and easy to get out of, after a long period of time, they would not be so comfortable. As Lynne says they need to be high backed for support. Good luck with your protests!

  11. It looks like the lobby of a hotel. One where they don't want people to hang about for long.

  12. Oh, dear - all looks a bit stagy doesn't it! Not very welcoming.

  13. I'm even more appalled after reading your previous post, Frances.

  14. Worse than I imagined. Whoever is responsible for this should be held to account. What on earth made them think that style of seating would be any use outside of a hotel lobby?! xx

  15. Suggests hotel lobby to me too. (Sitting down for ten minutes or so.) I so wonder who bespoke it...
