The bat outfit (as requested by Joanna)

I referred in my last post (on sartorial mistakes) to the Bat Outfit I wore to a son's  wedding. Well, I've swallowed the last remaining drops of pride, and here it is. I'm second from the left. Well, you can tell, can't you?

Kind comments only, please. It's a sensitive subject.

  1. It's quite stylish, in a vintage and slightly funereal way. A touch Edwardian in inspiration, maybe? I do like the hat.

    1. ER, I think that was my big mistake. I bought the hat first...

  2. It looks fine to me.
Having said that; I have been brainwashed to think this by all the women I have met. Lady's clothes are always fine, never make their bums look big. Just perfect from the Punk or Goth look to The fairy on the Christmas tree ensemble.

    1. Fine is what John says when he doesn't really like something. Oh dear.

  3. It looks fine to me too. I'm not sure if black is appropriate, but we men get away with it.

    1. Cro, black was totally inappropriate for a June wedding. What was I thinking of?

  4. Stylish suffragette comes to mind.

    1. That was the problem, Patsy. I fell for the hat, and afterwards, the whole thing went pear shaped.

  6. I think you look great! If I manage to look half as stylish at my daughter's wedding next year, I'll be pleased.

    1. Thank you, Teresa. But that hat has a lot to answer for (see above)!

  8. Well, you're wrong of course. You look extremely elegant. Not many could get away with black at a wedding, but you did.

    1. A June wedding? I think you're just being kind, Maggie. But then I did ask for kind comments....

  9. Thank you so much, Frances! You look beautiful and elegant. I especially love the gorgeous hat, but the whole outfit is stunning. xxx

  10. My sister and best friend both turned up at my wedding in black. I did wonder if they'd misread the invitation.

    1. Wendy, I wore black to my daughter's wedding, and tho I say it myself, I looked quite fetching. So it can work. But not The Bat!

  11. Black would certainly not be my choice for a wedding, but your outfit was definitely different ;-) And the hat is truly great! Like Libby commented above, my first thought was "Sufragette", too.

    1. Then suffragette it is, Meike. You're the fashion expert!

  12. Wow - what a great hat, Frances - I can see why it led you into the black side (though you do look very elegant)!

    1. Rosemary, the hat was stunning. But sadly, you can't go to a wedding in just a hat. Actually, I blame my daughter for letting me buy The Bat in the first place. She was with me.

  13. A quick glance at the photo before I read the accompanying text made me think the outfit on the right was the Bat Outfit. Truly batness is in the eye of the beholder. Both mothers look stunning.

P.S. -- For years the only word I have used to describe any woman's choice in fashion is "stunning"...In a former version of myself I once told Debbie that she looked like a daffodil, Ethel that she looked like a grape, and Catherine that she looked like the warden of a women's prison. These were all meant as high compliments, of course, but their expressions seemed to indicate otherwise. I changed my ways forever when my young friend Tim said, "Pay no attention to him, Catherine -- you look stunning." She seemed so pleased that I have said "stunning" ever since.

But in this case, it is really true. You really do look stunning. And the hat is worthy of the late Queen Mum.

    1. Stunning can be interpreted two ways. Clever, that. But thank you, amyway!

  14. In a different colour I think it would have looked great. I don't think I've ever seen anyone wearing a black dress for a wedding though. But then again, I might just have put that down to different traditions in different countries.

  15. I think black can look good for a wedding, but not this time. Sadly.

  16. Years ago when my grandmother disgraced the family by dying at the ridiculously young age (for her family) of 93 she had already warned me that she did not under any circumstances want black (and particularly black ties) at her funeral. So I've never (except for 'official' funerals) worn a black tie to one since. You may think all that's totally irrelevant and so it may be. However it did make me ponder on colours at weddings. I wore a grey morning suit to mine but the others wore black morning suits. As are your menfolk. If it's ok for men why not for women? As for your dress I am puzzled how anyone can truly comment (I enlarged it and actually thought it was navy) because the details are not clear. So I assume it's purely the colour that is the problem. May I be so bold as to suggest that you don't change it for what looks like cream culottes. PS If your S-I-L reads this blog my name is Adrian and I don't live in the Hebrides.

    1. Actually, it was the bride's mother, and she was wearing a very fetching dress. The culotte look was provided by a gust of wind. And Graham, I'm so glad you couldn't enlarge the photo properly, because the Giant Bat looks even worse.

    2. I'm hopeless at relations (not quite with relationships). Of course the bride's mother isn't your s-i-l. What was I thinking about?

  17. PS If you are wondering why I deleted my first comment there was one letter missing on one word and it altered the whole thing: 'me' should have read 'men'.
