Ode to winter 2012/13

The poet wrote, "if winter comes
Can spring be far behind?"
He must have been deluded, for
I think that you will find
The answer's "yes!" For all agree
This winter's been a bummer.
And what is worse, while we still freeze,
And wade in mud up to our knees,
While leaden skies ignore our pleas...
There still aren't any guarantees
We'll ever get a summer.

I HATE winter.

  1. I am just off to walk the dog on the grey, cold, muddy river bank. It will hopefully be a different story in a couple of months - after all we have been known to have heatwaves in April... oh, and snow!

    1. The sun's just come out. Wow! And please don't mention snow in April, Wendy...

    1. It's not even been pretty and crisp, has it? Just muddy and dreary. Like one long November!

  3. Oh, Frances! It's coming. Would we love summer as much without the winter? I love your ode.

  5. Well, it was flying, so I presume so. It glanced uncertainly at me as it passed, as if to say "I may have made a mistake here."

    1. I think its little corpse was being blown by the wind.

  6. I'm not sure we really need as much winter as we get.

  7. We had sun today and everyone was much happier. Only saw one grumpy person all day.

  8. When I was a child my Dad told me that I should never hate anything in this world (or, if you are that way inclined, presumably in the next either).

    1. Well I don't hate anyBODY. Does that make it ok?

    2. Not in my Dad's eyes but, hey, as he's no longer with us I'm sure you'll get away with it.

  9. The sun is shining bright today –
highlighting the frost upon the lawn,
bringing fresh hope to this sad lass
whose heart is sad and spirit torn,
that spring will soon come out to play,
and life reborn will bring a need to cut the grass...
erm, not sure I will welcome that...
    but that aside –
    could I be more glummer
    than knowing of the guarantee
    that in the summer,
mowing will be an almost constant chore –
    for tis a task I can’t abide,
and I wonder if the want of sun
is worth the cost of apathy,
sad or not, being rent asunder
as I shake free inertia, get of my ass,
    as for shames sake
I have to cut the grass?

Sad, I’m not really, although the above punctuation is.

Summer (as we knew it in the good old days) is sadly no longer guaranteed…bring back the good old days!

  11. Thanks, Rosemary. I think it's probably about zero here, too.
