We're off!

On this. Heathrow tomorrow, and then the ship on Wednesday for ten days. I hate all the hanging around at the airport and the early start, but can't wait to be on the ship. Sadly, we aren't allowed to swim off the boat, although it's not that big (health and safety, don't you know), but I hope to find a rocky cove or something (I've never been a lying-by-the-pool person*).

So if there are no comments from me for a while, it's not because I'm not interested: I'm just determined to leave the internet behind and read lots and lots of books. Heaven!

*I'm still not entirely sure I'm a cruise person, either. I haven't got the right clothes, or the sparkling white teeth. But I'm prepared to risk another try (in the interests of reasearch, of course).

  2. Frances, I would rather spend a week in a public convenience.
I do hope you enjoy the experience.

    1. Adrian, I used to feel l ike that (well, almost). Cruisees are better than you think. Pies and beer all included, of course.

  3. Reading lots and lots of books sounds like my idea of Heaven, too - interspersed with the kind of long and lonely walk I love so much, and some good food in between.
    Enjoy your holiday!

    1. Thank you, Patsy. Weren't you proposed to on a cruise? Or maybe I've got that wrong...

  5. I hope that you enjoy yourself. I just cannot imagine going on a cruise. If I were inclined to read books for 10 days I would rather be a recluse in a cottage away in the French, Spanish or Italian countryside in the warmth but near enough to a village with a café for coffee in the morning and food for lunch or dinner as the fancy took me.

    1. GB, if I were on my own, I'd quite agree. But John's mobility is poor, and this is a good way to get around without moving (so to speak). We spent many years holidaying in cottages in our beloved Corsica, but circumstances change, sadly.

  6. I'll stay by my pool (never lounging). My people once went on a cruise; father took one dinner jacket, mother took 100 dresses.

  8. Hope you have a great time Frances. All food for your writing. Will you dine at the captain's table? Who will you meet? Must be truthful here and say that they would have to pay me to go on a cruise, so will enjoy your experience instead.

    1. Cruises are better than you think, Maggie. I used to hate the idea. But informality and a small ship changed all that.

  9. I never thought I would go on a cruise, but last August ( between dogs!) we did a 4 day cruise around the channel from Southampton. It was so easy, just driving to S"hampton ( less than 2 hours) and getting on the ship..Oceana ( P and O ) Visiting Le Havre, and St. Peter Port, and we loved it. Off on an 8 day Rhine cruise in October this year, though we have to fly from Heathrow to Amsterdam, so not looking forward to that bit!! Have a great time. I look forward to finding out whereabouts you are cruising.
