The gas man and déjà vu

This has just happened again. It happens every year, and some years I mention it and some years I don't. This year's gas man was Gary. We liked Gary 😀

And we're still alive. And so is the boiler. I've just thrown away the "do not use this appliance" label, as I always do, but maybe I should have saved it for next year. Sigh.

  1. Just read the previous post. Glad that you are still with us. Our boiler lasted us about 30 years and then we moved on to a different system....the name escapes me at the moment, but we have no water tanks in the loft as husband needed said loft for an office so they had to go!

  2. Well, Frances, I hope that nothing goes wrong because you unlikely to be insured now. I'm sorry. It's my training.

    1. Oh dear. I had a sense of déjà vu and read last year's post and my comment. I was less verbose this year. But my training has held good.

    2. No matter, Graham. If we're dead the insurance will be of little use to us, and our heirs will no doubt survive...

    3. PS it wasn't last year. I think it was 2013!

    4. If you're dead it'll just upset your family and friends (I altered what I really wanted to say). The problem comes if you don't die. That could be most unpleasant.

    5. You make some good points, Graham, and we will check with our insurers. What puzzles me is that the gas people are happy to service it in the first place. BTW what was it you were going to say??

    6. I was going to say "would be really pissed off" but I decided against it. However seeing as you asked.....

  3. Can you not write them to say you no longer have a gas boiler?
Then by smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and you're covered

    1. We have the detectors, Frances. And I'm a terrible liar.

  4. I never had a contract for gas boilers just gave them a scrub with a Hush Puppy brush and a suck with the vacuum cleaner.

    1. Adrian, I thought a Hush Puppy was a shoe?

    2. It is a shoe if you asked at the shoe shop they gave you a little brass bristled brush which is ideal for cleaning spark plugs, diesel injectors and boiler jets. Useless for cleaning hoes but what the hell.

  5. I just went back to the old post and read my own comment. Well, I do find gas scary, and when we are staying at "our" cottage in Ripon, it is always my sister who has to do the stuff that involves the gas cooker there - my culinary contribution is limited to preparing salads, cheese platters and so on.
Therefore, even though I would probably not buy a new boiler, I guess the annual reminders would make me nervous, to say the least.

  6. I know everyone is being quite light hearted about this Frances, but it wouldn't be funny to get blown up. I've seen too many news bulletins about such disasters. Mind you, we've just had a bill for our annual gas service, and that isn't funny either!

    1. Maggie, I think after all these sobering comments I shall start to take this seriously. Our problem is that we have nowhere to put a 'legal' boiler. Something to do with flues...
