Your perfect dinner party

John and I were discussing this last night - who would comprise your perfect dinner party?
I would have:

Desmond Tutu (for his wonderful smile, and the fact that he summed up his life thus: "I have laughed and I have loved". Perfect.)

Dame Edna Everidge  (because I think he/she is one of the funniest people on this planet).

Judi Dench (just because she is wonderful).

David Nott (an amazing doctor who has spent much of his time working without pay in some of the worse war zones. That man is a saint).

Who would you have? Still living, if possible, and preferably people you haven't met.(Yes, I should be working, but I'm having a break.)

  1. Sorry, I've just seen that one's dinner guest should ideally still be alive.

    Seems sensible.

    2. Yes, I think she is still alive. I hadn't heard of her until SS suggested her, and then promptly heard of her from another source. One of those strange things...

  2. It's amazing how often this question pops up. However I've never had the question posed to me recently. I have, however, thought about it frequently (usually when driving long distances). I wouldn't want to be at a dinner party with any of the people that most people would chose. Why? Because I would immediately feel completely overwhelmed. I have been at dinners (not dinner parties but formal dinners) with brilliant and interesting (and sometimes famous or 'important') people and I've discovered one thing about many of them: they are the easiest people with whom to feel at ease because they are so confident in their own skin and make the same assumption about those around them. However at a formal dinner one can hide behind a confident silence.

  3. I'm afraid lack of space and confidence stops me from even imagining inviting famous strangers for a dinner party... ;)

    1. They don't have to be all that famous, DT. There must be someone you'd like to meet/feed? I'll provide the cook and the waiters!

    2. Frances, with a cook and waiters I won't have room for any guests (my only dining table is in my rather small kitchen); but okay, let's ignore the harsh facts of real life... My nominees would be J.K. Rowling (no introduction needed, I think), Alexander Rybak (violinist from Norway, born in Belarus) and David Zinn (American street artist from Michigan). David I have actually met once (at a street art festival in my town a few years ago) but as our conversation then lasted only a couple of minutes on the street, I don't think that counts. David draws fanciful little creatures with crayons on sidewalks (and they have names). Alexander is a talented violinist and singer/songwriter who in 2009 won the European Song Contest with a song entitled Fairytale (and will be representing Norway again in that context this year, by the way. I don't always watch but I might this year...) Besides the obvious fairytale theme, one thing these three have in common for me is how they use social media in communication with their fans.

  4. I would love to have Dick Strawbridge ( and his wife Angel) to dinner. I have been binge watching " Escape to the Chateau DIY" recently and he is adorable !! She is fun too ...I love her hair. Julie Walters could come too.

    2. Ooh, yes. Julie Walters. I hadn't thought of her.

    3. Graham, of course you can come too but it’ s a long way for you to come to Hertfordshire! ( and Julie is married!)

    4. Frances I commuted to New Zealand so Hertfordshire holds no fears for me. Well perhaps on second thoughts... As for marriage I've been there and done that and I wouldn't wish to do it again! I love friends but I'm not designed to live with anyone.

  5. I'm thinking! I'm thinking! Afraid those I'd like to have at a dinner party are all dead.
