Room 101

We are fans of the BBC programme Room 101, in which participants jettison things or people they don’t like. These are my top two:

1. Lol. I can’t bear it. It’s the equivalent of an exclamation mark. If something is funny, please leave it to speak for itself.

2. Ironing. Hours spent flattening clothes. Does anyone, anywhere, like ironing?

That’s all. What would you put in your Room 101?

  1. We've had to wait a long time between posts from you, Frances - I hope you were just too busy with the offline part of your life and not ill.
Ironing? Here is the one person who likes it! Honestly, I do enjoy ironing. It gives my mind and eyes a rest from my work in data/privacy protection, gives my hands something useful to do, and the result is nice - freshly ironed clothes for me (or O.K.) to wear.

In my Room 101, I'd toss all the leaf blowers in the world.

    1. I’m fine thank you, Meike. As for ironing, I think my two spinal fracture don’t help. I get backache as well as boredom....

  2. Good to have you back Frances. I use exclamation marks rather too much I think, and I don't mind ironing. I do it on Sunday mornings while listening to " The Archers" omnibus. After the ironing I clean the fish tank....not so enjoyable!

    1. Thnak you, Frances. I agree about ironing to the Archers. It makes it just bearable! (Btw that was an exclamation 🙂.)

  3. Wait, you can jettison people you don't like? I believe I can put together a long list of those. I am strongly tempted to put an exclamation mark here along with an LOL...but I am being sweet today, so I won't. My late mother-in-law was the best person to iron clothes, they were perfect when she finished with them.

    1. Kay, exclamation marks are fine - if it’s an exclamation. It’s just that people use them all over the place, don’t they?

    2. Here in TV, they show us what Trump has on Tweet, with all his exclamation marks. More than anything, that has made me dislike them. Shame really, I have sincerely meant every one of mine.

  4. Hadn't seriously thought about it but I don't like Lol either and would never use it. I used to enjoy ironing but only if watching a film at the same time. Since moving, however, I bought a small table-top board, ditching the full size I'd used for years, and only iron when absolutely necessary now!

    1. I use the top of the Aga for ‘ironing’ when possible. Works well for quite a lot of things, Rosemary.

  5. I don't iron, ever! (There's that exclamation point, but I won't add the LOL.) I don't buy anything that has to be ironed. I do have a friend who likes to iron and does it a lot. She enjoys ironing for the same reasons as Librarian. It takes all kinds I guess.

  7. Good to see you back. I'd pop that Greta Thunderbird into my 101. Annoying little girl she is. Come to think I too knew everything when I was sixteen.

  8. Years of reading blogs and, more recently, Facebook etc, has more or less cured me of minding any of the things that used to annoy me.

Once, I had such a build-up of ironing that I filled the spare bath with it, and had to buy new teeshirts as I'd forgotten I had any. I do like using proper napkins and I have a number of beautiful old Irish linen tablecloths however, so I bought myself a splendidly efficient new iron last year and now it's a job I quite enjoy - or at least, I find having done it is very satisfying. I listened to an hour of Hamlet yesterday while I ironed, hailing kicked the Archers habit some years ago.
