Coming soon to a nursery near you...

...a 'sip and see' party. We've had the baby shower, then the party where the baby's gender is revealed (prenatally) via the colour of the inside of a (white-covered) cake. Well, now, to complete the baby celebrations, we have this. The happy parents give a party for friends and relatives to sip (a drink) and see (the new arrival) ...and, presumbly, bring yet another babygro/frilly frock/fluffy teddy (if you look at the invitation above, you will see that the name of purveyors of such giifts are craftily - if not subtly - included in the invitation).

Isn't that lovely? Altogether now....aaaaaaaaah!

  1. a 'Sip and See' party - that's a new one on me! I have also never heard of a gender revealing party... in my day, that would have been the birth!

  2. It's all ridiculous! 30 plus years ago we all just got pregnant and 9 months later a little surprise popped out ( 3 boys in my case)..then the new baby might have got a few presents from close friends and family and that was it! We were in Northumberland when our 1st was born 35 years ago, and the tradition there was to put a silver coin under the baby's pillow at the first meeting.....I don't remember my son earning much!

    1. Same here, Frances. A couple of babygros and a matinee jacket (they seem to have gone out of fashion) if you were lucky!

  3. It's a completely new one to me. I have a practice (I nearly said a rule but it's not) in regard to presents. I buy one when I think the occasion merits it. That may be a birthday; it may be a Christening (after all I had/have about six or seven Godchildren); it may be a house-warming; it will always be a wedding; it may be simply because I happen to feel like it at that moment in relation to that person or because I see something I think will be particularly appropriate for a particular person [oops, I nearly used the 'them' word]. I will not, however, be bullied.

    1. That's a lovely way of giving, GB. I think the pressure to buy presents on The Day leads to the great unwanted gift problem.

    1. Neither do I, Rosemary. I'e just told expectant daughter-in-law about it, and she's never heard of it either.

  5. I think gin would be good, BiP; to be taken in large draughts during labour.

  6. As far as I know, nobody here in Germany has Baby Showers, Gender Revealing Parties or "Sip & Sees". But of course parents are as proud of their new arrivals as anyone, and their friends and relatives send presents and cards or visit with presents and cards. We just don't have an extra name or theme for such events, I guess. Not yet, at least - usually, Germans are only too ready to pick up on any wave coming from across the Big Pond.
