Seeing faces (a displacement-activity-post)

I'm sure I'm not alone in seeing faces in things. I've been looking at this little face on our bedroom light switch for years, and finally decided that it just needed a mouth. Voila! John likes it, so I'm afraid it's staying for the time being.

There are two fox faces on the ancient wooden floor of our bathroom, and years ago, there were rows of little faces in the floral curtains. The trouble is, once you've seen a face, you can't un-see it. It's there to stay. So those curtains were never quite the same, peopled as they were with all those tiny pink faces instead of flowers.

That's all. And yes,  I have got better things to do. I'm just not doing them at the moment...

  2. Pareidolia, it's called. As I'm sure you knew.
I used to have an oak-veneered wardrobe which, late at night, had a dancing ghost in its door.

    1. Thanks for that, Tim (though not easy to remember!).

  3. Having read Tim's comment saved me from looking the word up myself; I knew it, but couldn't remember it quite now.
I am pretty sure that Pete at http://heidelbergensis.blogspot.de/ has written about it at some stage. Anyway, if you have never been to his blog, I highly recommend it. No matter whether you have better things to do or not ;-)

  4. Yes, I see faces in things too. When it's a potato I have to bake it as I can't bring myself to set about him with a peeler.

  5. I have absolutely no imagination for such things Frances. However you can doubtless guess what I shall be doing to at least one of my light switches when I have read this. if you ever stay in a hotel room I have stayed in then I'm sure you know what you are likely to find from now on. It took me this long to be young and I've never indulged in vandalism in my life. I think this is a pretty mild way to start my career.

    1. Felt tip wipes off easily, GB. Hardly vandalism...?

    2. What I lack in imagination, Frances, I try and make up for in dramatic effect. Sometimes (frequently, in fact) I fail. C'est la vie.

  7. I agree about once having seen it, you can't un-see it. Can't see any faces in my light-switches though (which are of different kind). I'll have to find my smiles elsewhere :)
