Work in progress

This is awful. I decided this morning to clear out our wardrobe. After fourteen years. How shameful is that? (Sadly, I am not like Meike, who posts wonderful photos of her organised wardrobe.) But I just can't bear to throw most of it away. There's that hat (worn years ago for a wedding), and the lovely top (foreground, on the floor, with turquoise sparkly bits. Not me at all) which I bought at hideous expense just because...I loved it. But I have hardly worn it (because it isn't me. See above). And denim. I LOVE denim. Anything denim. All those jeans. But jeans don't go out of date, right? And the rather nasty beige skirt (top left) which I've probaby had for more than twenty years, before most of you were born,  but which occasionally Comes In Useful, when I'm desperate (I rarely wear skirts). And there are hundreds of clattery skeleton-in-the-cupboard coathangers (will Oxfam want  those?).

And then there are the books, which have been heaped up by the bed, and badly need pruning. But I hate getting rid of books, even those I didn't  enjoy.

(The smudge, top left, won't stay. It's my finger over the lens.)

Time for a coffee break.

  1. I accidentally bought two new dresses yesterday which means I've now got to get rid of at least a couple of items. If I don't everything will be so squished up none of it will be worth wearing.

    1. How do you accidentally buy dresses, Patsy? I do hope you like them.

  2. There's no point clearing out wardrobes. I've done mine at least twice in the last year and as a result I can't find anything. Leave well alone I say x

    1. To late, Teresa. I know it won't last, but I'm feeling sooooo smug.

  3. Sorry, Frances, but the beige skirt has to go.

    1. Thanks to you, it has, Wendy. I needed someone to make me decide.

  4. I'm with you on the jeans. My wardrobe consists mainly of jeans - blue, brown and black and lots and lots of tops, which I am always buying. These days I try to buy one, throw one away, which seems to be working. I confess I haven't worn a skirt for years, and only possess one for winter, one for summer and a fancy frilly black one for 'going out' which I have never worn for going out. I would wear the blue top with the turquoise sparkly bits though.

    1. But do you throw the jeans out, Maggie? I just collect more, and more...

  5. I've got clothes that are more than twenty years old. I don't see anything wrong with that. If you'd bought it second-hand, you'd call it 'vintage' - well, you and I wouldn't, but *one* would.

I did turn out my wardrobe not long ago, to get rid of everything that didn't fit. I've given most of the items, some of which I liked very much, to a couple of friends. But now I mustn't put on weight.

    1. Vintage. I like that. Having a collection of vintage clothes sounds better than having a load of old tat. Thank you, Z.

  7. It's been a while since my last wardrobe-featuring post, Frances, but thank you for mentioning me in this context :-)
Skirts and dresses are the love of my life (in terms of inanimate objects), and some of them are older than I am, or about my age (nearly 46), and I still wear them.
As for jeans, I have trouble finding a pair of jeans I really, really like and that fits well. Once I find one, I try to hang on to it until it nearly falls off me in shreds.

    1. Have you tried Gap for jeans, Meike? They're wonderful! But maybe Gap haven't extended their empire as far as Germany.

    2. They have; there is a huge store in Stuttgart, but I rarely go there since there are so many clothes shops in my town.

  8. I have hats I wore to church when ladies wore hats and gloves to church...how many years ago was that? About 50 I'd say! Also a few "special" dresses, when ladies wore dresses, that I just can't part with, also just can't fit into anymore and haven't for years. Why do we hang on so???

    1. I LOVE hats, Jill, but no longer buy them as lovely Joan has a hat-hire shop in Devizes, and people come from miles around for her hats. Oh, and I hang onto things because I'm lazy, and can'tmake decisions.

  9. I love denim too. I've tried from time to time to change style a little bit, but a wardrobe without denim in it is unthinkable to me :) I did have a big clearout and renewal of my wardrobe back in the autumn because I lost a lot of weight. So bought quite a few new items, in smaller sizes, and really hope never to need the old ones again. So I gave most of those away to charity. So far so good, and I'm looking forward to another round of clearout and shopping frenzy when we get round to summer again...

  10. One of the Good Things about living alone is that no one else is vying for my wardrobe space. I did have a major clear-out a few years ago in Scotland although you'd never guess looking in my wardrobes. I'm light on clothes and shoes so they last a long time. That doesn't stop me buying 'replacements' when I get tired of the old style or colours (particularly of shirts). Nor have I worn 'winter' clothes since 2005 so there's lots of them in the wardrobe in Scotland too. I should be ashamed but I'm not. In a funny sort of way we are what we wear and if we do not stay the same then our clothes will naturally change. I don't wear suits since I retired for example. And I had never worn jeans until a few years ago. Frances wear what you want when you want. Keep what you want. Throw away what you don't want. If you want to that is. If you don't want to then don't. Now I'm just being sillier than usual. It's raining and that sort of afternoon.

    1. We have a very small bedroom, GB, with little wardrobe space, so it was partly a needs must exercise. (I cucked away a lot of his stuff, too, but he won't notice.)

  11. I seem to be constantly getting rid of clothes these days, partly because I kept them too long! Have to agree with Wendy about the skirt, although I do like wearing skirts. But I had too many 'droopy' ones for my short height so gave them away to local charity shop (very good condition). Have never really 'got into' jeans, but like other casual trousers.

    1. The trouble with skirts, Rosemary, is skirts mean tights, and tights mean hassle (and ladders). I do like to scrub up in a skirt occasionally, though. That Skirt has gone to Oxfam.
