Of poodles

One of these has just won Supreme Champion at Crufts. Good for him. But can someone please tell me why these poor creatures are submitted to a kind of topiary that would make even a Downton garden bush look ridiculous? Why the naked bottom? And the fluffy leg-warmers? And the extrardinary hair-do? Why?

When I was a child, we had a standard poodle, and she needed clipping, but all over. And she still looked like a dog. A normal, evenly-covered  sort of dog.

I just wondered.

  1. I love dogs, especially my schnauzer, but that poodle just looks ugly and ridiculous. My pup has an even all over short cut. (not like show schnauzers, they also can look a bit ridiculous! )

  2. Completely agree with you, Frances. Poor dogs. Let them be proper dogs I say! x

    1. Yes. I think a dog should LOOK like a dog, Teresa!

  3. I can't say I was that keen on any of the finalists, Frances - I just like scruffy mutts like my Bonnie.

    1. I missed Crufts, Wendy. I think they all look in/over/bred.

  4. There's a much more dignified 'official' cut for poodles, which looks like trousers. Lady Magnon showed me that picture last night, but I won't tell you what her comment was!!!!

  5. I never understood this, either, Frances, but neither do I understand human hairdos sometimes. Only that humans usually decide for themselves, while the poor poodles have to wear whatever their owner thinks best.

    1. Quite, Meike. But one of my sons shaved off all his hair when he was going through A Phase, and that was far worse than any hairdo.

  6. It looks odd but I don't suppose it bothers the dog. I'd rather see extreme hair cuts than breeding for extreme characteristics which lead to medical problems.

    1. Patsy, I can't believe that chilly bare bottom doesn't bother the dog. It makes me feel cold, just looking at it.

  7. It reminds me of pushy mums who enter their little girls for beauty competitions. It's for the parent/owner, not the child or dog.
