Open letter to Fairy Liquid

Dear Fairy Liquid

For years, I have been a loyal customer. I have defended you aginst people who say that cheaper brands are just as good by replying that you are not only excellent, but you last for ages. I haven't been taken in by your ridiculous advertisements about "the hands that wash dishes" being "soft as your face", because I am old enough and (I hope) wise enough to know that my hands will never be as soft as my face. But I can forgive you for those. I understand that you have to advertise.

Nevertheless, I am deeply disappointed. Why? Because you have cheated. You look the same, and smell the same, but (and here's the really hurtful bit) I strongly suspect that you have been diluted. That's right. Diluted. Made weaker. You don't go nearly as far as you used to. And I'm upset. Because I trusted you.

So that's it. It's over between you and me. I can hardly believe it myself. All those years...all those dishes.... all those happy times over the kitchen sink... all those laughs among the sparkling dishes and the suds...all that wasted loyalty.

So if you see me buying a cheaper brand, it's because I feel betrayed. It's only what you deserve.

  1. I recently changed from Fairy to a cheaper brand for the same reason. How dare they?

  2. Definitely not fair to their faithful Fairy-followers!

  3. I've never been loyal to one brand in my life, I've always shopped around. The same is said for shampoo too. You buy one you like then after awhile you find its changed and it doesn't feel the same ... or is that just me and my hair that's changed.

  4. Yes, it used to be a quick squirt and the dishes were grease-free. Now half-an-inch disappears from the bottle each time.
And, is it me, or is Plenty kitchen-paper less strong and absorbent these days? And is the patterned one more efficient than the plain white one, as my mother claims?

  5. I don't wash enough dishes to notice the difference yet! However, it's the same with just about everything these days - they either mess with the great design (rubbish new Kenco coffee jars) or change the recipe, never for the better.

I've written two letters of complaint in the past year about products and I did get a decent response - not that it will change anything back!

  6. Colette, if you've noticed it too, I must be right!

Kay, you're right. I shall stop believing in Fairy.

Jarmara, just so long as you don't use Fairy on your hair!

Joanna, quite. (I buy my kitchen papaer form the market. Four rolls for £1.10)

Rosemary, I'm thinking of writing to them, but and I'm not sure where they live...

  7. It seems to me that as soon as you find something you like, it's either changed or withdrawn from sale. Don't they want to keep their customers?

  8. Fairy has changed its smell now as well. The other day I bought a double sized one. "50% EXTRA FREE" bellowed the label. It's dark red and smells of what my mother used to call "hair wash." Not the same at all.

  9. I don't have a dishwasher, but maybe that's the answer? I've tried lots of different brands, but come back to Fairy - we have a local discount shop where you can buy well known brands of toiletries very cheaply.

  10. Gail - apparently not!

I haven't come across that kind, Rosamund. But I shall avoid it!

Maggie, trust me. It still doesn't last nearly as long as it did, discount or no!

  11. The minute anything is 'new and improved' I stop buying it - they mean it's worse but they're charging more, or it's worse because they're spending less to make it and charging the same.

  12. Oh Patsy...so young, and yet so cynical...

  13. Oh for a new Tinkerbell style washing up liquid, that we can all believe in !
